<p>Yes, I know; vitamins supplements are really intended for those who don&#8217;t follow a proper diet, and I&#8217;m pretty sure that I get my fill of all the nutrients, minerals and vitamins I need. Having said that, we always try to take our vitamins, Arthur gets kiddie ones and we take the occassional multi vitamins just to keep us topped up. I know that I could probably buy the <a href="http://www.mensvitamin.org/">best multivitamin for men</a> if I wanted to, but I don&#8217;t really feel like I need anything like that. I do occasionally take an <a class="zem_slink freebase/en/iron_supplements" title="Iron supplements" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_supplements">iron supplement</a> too, especially since there was a time I went to give blood and was turned away because of a low <a class="zem_slink freebase/en/hemoglobin" title="Hemoglobin" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hemoglobin">haemoglobin</a> count.</p>
<p>What vitamins do you take?</p>

<p>Well, I haven&#8217;t really got into my diet 100%. I&#8217;m sort of winding down, which is sort of working, as I&#8217;m eating less garbage and starting to work on the healthy foods. For example, I could be having a <a class="zem_slink freebase/en/chocolate" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chocolate" title="Chocolate" rel="wikipedia">chocolate</a> pudding at the moment, instead I have a pile of frozen fruit with low fat <a class="zem_slink freebase/en/yoghurt" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yoghurt" title="Yoghurt" rel="wikipedia">yoghurt</a> at my side. It kills the craving for sweet stuff and feels like you&#8217;re eating ice cream. I know you can get <a href="http://www.lipovox.com/">safe weight loss pills</a> and all, but I&#8217;m going down the low calorie route instead. I think there&#8217;s more value in teaching myself how to eat properly, rather than use a technique that gives me short term results.</p>
<p>Still need to get into the right mindset though &#8230;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I&#8217;ve found these great <a href="http://www.newsoftheworld.co.uk/news/598204/Store-launches-pound3-a-pop-version-of-Pot-Noodle-snack.html">M&#038;S noodles</a> which I had for lunch; they&#8217;re just 300 calories and made from fresh ingredients; as opposed to plain old pot noodles. You simply add hot water and off you go. I still find it quite strange that <a href="http://www.marksandspencer.com/">M&#038;S</a> have a complete range of branded items you can get in their food store. From branded water to noodles, they do the lot; and they have a whole range of other items, all the way up to <a href="http://www.wrinkleremovers.org/">wrinkle remover</a> and furniture for your home. The operational challenges of having such a wide range of products must be immense!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Well, that time has come again, where the scales have starting complaining and it&#8217;s time to knock a few kilos back. The truth is that over Xmas I put on a few kilos and for some reason I haven&#8217;t managed to get back into the right mindset to start losing weight again. Anyway, target is set and I&#8217;m heading down the right road. Tomorrow is <a class="zem_slink freebase/en/shrove_tuesday" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shrove_Tuesday" title="Shrove Tuesday" rel="wikipedia">Shrove Tuesday</a>, so what better day to start?</p>
<p>I&#8217;m doing the calorie counting thing again, as that seems to be the best way to keep the weight off. It&#8217;s also the healthiest way to do it. There&#8217;s lots of information about the <a href="http://www.dietpillsideeffects.com/">side effects of diet pills</a>, so I&#8217;m happy to go down what I consider the REAL way to lose weight.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>So, I&#8217;ve taken a bit of a break off my diet over <a class="zem_slink freebase/en/christmas" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas" title="Christmas" rel="wikipedia">Christmas</a>. I as expecting to put on weight as we were visiting our families in Malta and having lunch with one family and dinner with the other. And besides the expected increase in calorific intake, there were all the Christmas goodies and spirit to boot; with a net effect of a 3 kilo increase.</p>
<p>So it&#8217;s time to get back to 1500 calories a day. It will take some time to shave off the weight, but I know I can do it, just as I did before Christmas came along. I&#8217;ll need to find some time to go to the gym and spend some time on some <a href="http://www.globalfitness.com/">fitness equipment</a>, but I&#8217;ll figure out how to do that next week. Too much to do at the moment <img src='http://www.cutajar.net/owen/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif' alt=';)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I&#8217;ve managed to start going to the gym again even if it&#8217;s only twice a week. My mornings are shot now, as the twins keep Camille up all night, so I&#8217;m on Arthur duty, getting him ready for school and all that. However, I have managed to find a slot during my break. I only have an hour, so it&#8217;s a bit tight, especially as I like to get a shower at the end, but I still manage to get some work done. I usually manage to get 20 minutes doing some <a class="zem_slink freebase/guid/9202a8c04000641f80000000001c7775" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerobic_exercise" title="Aerobic exercise" rel="wikipedia">cardio</a> work (I prefer a stepper rather than something like a <a href="http://www.globalfitness.com/detail_elliptical_training_machine.asp?id=378">Life Fitness treadmill</a>), then a couple of <a class="zem_slink freebase/guid/9202a8c04000641f8000000000b2f880" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weight_machine" title="Weight machine" rel="wikipedia">weight machines</a> for my upper body. </p>
<p>I&#8217;m glad I&#8217;ve managed to find some way to spend some time at the gym, the twins are 6 weeks old now and it was time I managed to sort something out.</p>

<p>Well, this week hasn&#8217;t been too bad, but I don&#8217;t think I&#8217;ve managed to lose any weight. My social life has just been a bit too hectic and I&#8217;ve been eating out lots (including a trip to the Chinese last night). I knew I&#8217;d be having a big meal, so I skipped breakfast, had a fruit for lunch and walked 2 miles to get to the <a class="zem_slink freebase/guid/9202a8c04000641f800000000003490c" title="Restaurant" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Restaurant">restaurant</a>, but I&#8217;m pretty sure I ate more than twice my daily allowance (and that&#8217;s just a conservative estimate)</p>
<p>I&#8217;m doing this on <a class="zem_slink freebase/guid/9202a8c04000641f800000000000ef42" title="Calorie" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calorie">calorie</a> counting alone. I&#8217;m not sure if <a href="http://www.anoretix.com/">appetite suppressants</a> would work on me anyway, as my &#8220;hunger&#8221; is really in my head, not in my stomach; and I&#8217;m perfectly capable of eating if I don&#8217;t feel hungry. So, after a week of effort, I&#8217;m hoping the net effect is that my weight is the same as last week. I&#8217;ll give myself a weighing tomorrow and we&#8217;ll see.</p>

The nice thing about it is that it&#8217;s helping me identify when I tend to <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snack_food" title="Snack food" rel="wikipedia">snack</a> and where my weight increase comes from. It&#8217;s mainly &#8220;cleaning up&#8221; after Arthur, or snacking on the wrong things. Nothing that can&#8217;t be fixed, but it&#8217;s just going to take some will power. Pity I can&#8217;t use something like one of those <a href="http://www.filtersfast.com/AC-Filters-cat.asp">AC filters</a> to let only the good stuff through huh?</p>
<p>Anyway, I&#8217;m going to try and weight myself once a week; after all, I don&#8217;t really want to be obsessing about what I&#8217;m doing. I&#8217;m using <a href="http://fatsecret.com">FatSecret</a> to keep track of what I&#8217;m doing; and I might just publish something onto this blog if I can pick out some of the graphical bits.</p>

<p>Well, today has been much much better than yesterday. I&#8217;m still under my 1500 calorie quota, which means I can even afford a biscuit if I want it. It&#8217;s quite a simple diet really, no <a href="http://www.dietpillcritic.com/diet-pills/phenocal/">phenocal</a> or any other drugs. The trick is to sum up all the <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calorie" title="Calorie" rel="wikipedia">calories</a> you eat and stay within a boundary that means that you eventually lose some weight. It worked well for me the other time; so I&#8217;m sure it will work for me again.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the bottom line; the average calorific intake for a male is supposed to be around 2400 calories; it&#8217;s more in my case, because I&#8217;m carrying a substantial bit of weight around. Now, if I keep myself at a deficit, the body has to turn on its own resources (read fat) and use them up to make up the difference. So .. the question is, how long can I keep it up?</p>

<p>So, I&#8217;ve started counting calories again. I mainly manage to keep my weight stable without trying too hard, but over summer I&#8217;ve put on a couple of kilos every time I went on holiday. With three different holidays you can guess the damage .. and unless I stay on the straight and narrow, I&#8217;m not going to drop back down to the weight I was at the start of summer.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s not too far to go, but i&#8217;m not going to be taking any drugs or funny stuff like a <a href="http://www.coloncleanserreview.net/">colon cleanser</a> or anything like that. So, today I started counting and will be aiming at 1500 calories a day. I sort of blew that with <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bolognese_sauce" title="Bolognese sauce" rel="wikipedia">spaghetti bolognese</a> for dinner .. but it wasn&#8217;t that bad on the whole (quite yummy actually)</p>
