Barcodes on your mobile

My mate Andy today showed me a really cool 2D barcode that can be read by your mobile phone to give you a URL to a website. It’s a cool technique that can be used for a number of different applications, from advertising to touristic attractions. He had some software installed on the phone to read the barcode, but he didn’t need a barcode scanner, not even one like a Symbol LS2208; instead this used the mobile phone’s camera to detect the barcode and once it acquires the 2D barcode, it tries to resolve it into a website.

From what I understand it uses 2D barcodes because they have a high degree of redundancy; which makes it less prone to errors. Very cool stuff I thought; I’d like to see more of it.
